Spring has a way of waking things up.

The weather warms, routines shift, and many of us feel a renewed sense of motivation whether that’s getting outside more, cleaning out closets, or resetting habits.

But there’s something else that tends to show up this time of year too: an increase in body image pressure. As layers come off, conversations around weight, appearance, and “getting ready for summer” often get louder.

As St. Louis dietitians, we see this every year, and it’s not a coincidence. Diet culture ramps up its messaging in the spring, increasing pressure around weight, appearance, and “getting ready for summer.”

And here’s what we feel is important: We don’t need to change our body to feel better in it.

Sometimes, what actually helps is changing how you relate to your body.

Let’s talk about a few ways to “spring clean” your body image, without falling into diet culture.

Watch: Body Image & Spring Mindset

1. Clean Out the “Someday Clothes”

Your closet can quietly shape how you feel about your body, every single day.

Clothes that don’t fit, feel uncomfortable, or serve as “motivation” can reinforce the idea that your body isn’t where it should be.

Instead, ask:

  • Does this fit me right now?
  • Do I feel comfortable wearing this today?

If not, it may be time to let it go.

What we see in practice:

When your environment aligns with your body as it is today, it creates space for more comfort, confidence, and a more supportive relationship with yourself.

2. Shift from Appearance → Function

You don’t have to love everything about your body to respect it.

A more sustainable shift is moving from:

  • “How does my body look?”
    to
  • “What does my body allow me to do?”

Examples we hear from clients:

  • “My legs keep me active with my kids.”
  • “My body got me through a stressful season.”
  • “I can show up for my life.”

This shift reduces pressure and builds a more stable sense of self.

3. Audit Your Social Media Feed

Your brain adapts to what it sees repeatedly.

If your feed is filled with:

  • Before/after photos
  • Unrealistic body standards
  • “Fix your body” messaging

…it can quietly reshape what you believe is “normal.”

A simple reset:

  • Unfollow accounts that leave you feeling worse
  • Follow more body diversity
  • Pay attention to how you feel after scrolling

This is something we actively coach clients on at our St. Louis nutrition practice, because the mental environment matters just as much as physical habits.

A Different Kind of Spring Reset

If you’ve been stuck feeling frustrated with your body, you’re not alone.

But instead of asking:
👉 “How do I fix my body?”

Try asking:
👉 “What would help me feel more at home in it?”

That’s the work we do every day with clients at McDaniel Nutrition Therapy.
