Nothing says summer more than picnics, barbecues, and nights with your family grilling in the backyard. When most people think about grilling, meat based options like hamburgers and hot dogs are the first things that come to mind. But with more and more people trying to eat less meat, you’re likely to have one or two people at your party looking for a plant-based option. Our Guide to Plant-Based Grilling makes it easier than ever to grill up some things that your plant-based friends will love!
With many convenient plant-based options on the market today grilling can be simple and yummy for any vegan friends of family members. Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are two of the companies spearheading the rise of vegan meat alternatives. Many of these products are similar to your standard grilling options, so you can throw them on the grill with everything else. If you’re more of a chef and want to create your own options, you can make your own veggie burgers, pulled jackfruit sandwiches, grilled tofu, or veggie kabobs.
At McDaniel Nutrition we love incorporating plant-based options into our meals for an extra nutrient boost!
Tips for Plant-Based Grilling
- Marinade and flavor up your veggies, tofu, mushroom buns and vegan meat alternatives. The more seasoning you add the better taste and variety you will get. Consider options like Cajun seasoning, vegan dressings and sauces, or even lemon juice!
- Be mindful of your prep! Vegan options and vegetarian dishes don’t require as much cooking time as standard grilling foods. Cut your veggies a little thicker and monitor your cooking time so they don’t get mushy.
- Take advantage of grilling tools! Use a grilling basket to cook veggies, use skewers for even cooking distribution, or try a flat top grill avoid cross-contamination with meat products.
