What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

While anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, the registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) guarantees the highest level of education and training established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). In addition to a bachelor’s degree, an RD/RDN must fulfill a specially designed, accredited nutrition curriculum, complete an extensive internship program supervised by facilities such as a clinical health care facility or community agency and pass a rigorous registration exam. Roughly half of all RDs/ RDNs hold graduate degrees and many have certifications in specialized fields, such as sports, pediatric or gerontological nutrition.

What are the benefits in working with a dietitian?

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist has the highest level of nutrition counseling. When you see a dietitian the last thing you will get is a one-size-fits all diet plan. Dietitians offer personally tailored health prescriptions. Dietitians are equipped to help you manage a chronic disease or figure out how to feed your picky eater. Dietitians believe and promote sustainable weight loss approaches that you and your family can stick with for the long haul.  Nutrition advice will always be based on the most current body of nutrition evidence, yet be packaged for you in a realistic and practical manner.

What should I expect at the initial consultation?

Prior to the initial consultation you will be directed to fill out the appropriate nutrition assessment forms (weight loss, general health, sports nutrition, maternal nutrition). At the initial consultation, we will go over your information to glean insight into your personal health goals.  Based on your goals a personalized nutrition plan will be created and we will discuss supportive/sabotaging health habits towards progress.  In the end, we will formulate your steps to monitor on-going progress and create a follow-up plan.  Meal plan templates will be provided to offer support for nutrition recommendations. No one session is the same because you are unique and the direction of each session depends on you and your distinctive goals.

Does McDaniel Nutrition take insurance?

Yes! McDaniel Nutrition currently is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Health Care and American Speciality Health. We also accept HSA or flex spending accounts. All packages are non-refundable.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

All appointment cancellations must be completed 24 hours in advance. Failure to cancel within 24 hours will still require half payment of the service.

What if I am running late?

Appointments start on time. If you are late, you can use the remaining time of your appointment. You will be required to pay for the entire cost of the visit.

How long are sessions?

All Initial consultations are 60 minutes.

Follow up appointments are 30 minutes.

Does every session need to be conducted in person?

Appointments can be held in-person, via telephone or skype.  The preference of contact is up to the client.

How often will I need to see you?

Every client follow up plan is personalized.  Some clients may need frequent visits in the beginning with less support as they adopt and maintain healthy habits.  Many clients receive the feedback and guidance in one session. The follow up frequency is a mutually agreed plan conducted with the client at the initial consultation.

Follow up sessions include re-evaluation of nutrition plans, review of goals and strategies, evaluation of follow up laboratory work (as needed), discussion of resources that help support goals (i.e. nutritional supplements, working with a therapist, books to read, etc).  Follow-up sessions may be conducted in person, via phone or email based on personal preference
